Tape Backup Solutions For Manual Tape Environments

ZELA operates as a monitoring system over your entire tape environment giving you complete control for managing datasets on tape. ZELA's rule-based system is a robust method for maximizing the use of tape media by consolidating datasets through conflict free! INTELLIGENT Stacking, Compression, Re-blocking, and Media Conversions. ZELA’s tape stacking software can reduce mounts by moving small dataset to DASD using ZELA's Tape to DASD feature. ZELA will also reduce manual intervention and minimize error potential.

ZELA will utilize your current tape media more efficiently and has saved data centers hundreds of thousands of dollars by consolidating multiple datasets on a single cartridge, which will maximize the use of your Media to its fullest capacity. By using this tape stacking software, your company will also cut its vaulting costs by moving fewer cartridges off site.

For Robotic Library Environments

ZELA has been the preferred solution for many data centers world-wide for automating the process of managing Robotic Libraries. ZELA can be utilized as a "watch dog" over your Robotic facilities helping you fully exploit this technology.

ZELA maximizes your Robotic Library environment by consolidating datasets to fewer tapes via its conflict free, intelligent stacking concept, thereby, reclaiming space on cartridges and increase the availability of robotic slots.

Logical Ejection is a ZELA feature used very frequently to free up slots within the Robotic Library. Logical Ejection copies idle or unwanted datasets from the media within the Robotic Library to an output destination such as external tape cartridges in the manual library or to DASD.

With its Automated Scratch Pool Management, ZELA can automatically consolidate datasets within the Robotic Facility to insure that there always will be a sufficient number of scratches for production processing.

Intelligent Dataset Tape Stacking Software

ZELA maximizes tape utilization by consolidating datasets to fewer tapes through conflict-free intelligent stacking, compression re-blocking and media conversion. This benefits the data center by:
  • Reclaiming underutilized media resources within the manual or Robotic libraries
  • Reduce tape media usage
  • Reduce the amount of tape media required for vaulting
  • Free up floor space by removing no longer needed tape racks
  • Insure continuous availability of scratches within your scratch pools
  • Reduce human intervention
ZELA's dataset stacking simulation feature allows the user to forecast the effects of dataset stacking in order to have an assessment of the media requirements and potential tape resources savings before running ZELA in a production mode.

Media Conversion

ZELA automates the process of migrating tape datasets from old media to the new high density media. During this process the user can optionally specify stacking and consolidation, thereby reclaiming media for future production processing.

As an automated tape stacking software system, ZELA automatically generates the JCL for the process of copying datasets from the old to new tape media. All that the user is required to do is specify which tape datasets are candidates for migration. ZELA has saved thousands of dollars by reducing time and human resources to perform media conversion.

Logical Ejection

Logical Ejection is an action accomplished via a high-speed COPY of the subject dataset(s) from the media within the automated tape library to an output destination device of choice. Media options include:
  • External tape cartridges
  • Tape reels
  • DASD & DASD arrays
  • Optical Storage devices
  • Remote electronic tape vaults
  • Other robotics facilities
  • Back into the original facility for reconsolidation

Research and Analysis Processing

This phase is performed to rapidly assemble all pertinent information relating to your company's entire population of tapes. The MVS catalog, the tape management system catalog, and the robotics tape library control datasets (CDS) are accessed and data relating to the tape cartridges is extracted. This extraction effectively creates a real time "snap shot" of your data center's tape population and includes information regarding both your automated and manual tape libraries.

ZELA’s tape backup solutions outperform all other products available today. For example, a 400,000 volume tape library can be researched and analyzed in 15 to 45 minutes (depending on the processing environment and tape management system in place) - compared to processing times of 8 to 12 hours for other products to reach and analyze 400,000 volumes.

SMF Statistical Analysis

ZELA provides an SMF statistical analysis utility to aid users with customization of the control parameters and generic dataset filtering patterns. Users can elect to process historic SMF information in order to validate their ZELA customization.

This process will identify any dataset stacking conflicts that may have resulted from user customization including concurrent use, concatenation and datasets opened with a disposition of mod.

ZELASAFE Dataset Protection

ZELASAFE Dataset Preservation Options furnish users with enhanced dataset protection for critical production application files. ZELASAFE offers multi-level support to accommodate a wide variety of dataset protection to address each data center's unique needs.

Level One ZELASAFE protection employs Dataset Level Security, which allows users access to their files, while honoring the normal types of retention methods and ensuring data integrity.

Although all datasets can benefit from Level One ZELASAFE dataset protection, the internet was to provide the additional security needed for:

Catalog Controlled Datasets Cycle Controlled Datasets Usage Controlled Datasets User Controlled Datasets
Level Two ZELASAFE protection employs Volume Level Security, which prohibits users from altering or scratching their files before normal retention method expiration occurs.

This feature allows data centers to administer extra protection for datasets being archived or relocated for Disaster Recovery purposes.

DFDSS and FDR Support

Tape backup solutions from ZELA allow users to process files created by the DFDSS and FDR backup utilities maximizing the use of physical tape media. ZELA can also allow users to create dual copies of these proprietary formats for Disaster Recovery.
